The 043-198-035 is a complete, stock-length cylinder head stud kit designed for 1600cc dual-port air-cooled Volkswagen engines. This 48-piece kit is the standard for engine rebuilders using late-model cases with 8mm "case saver" inserts. Unlike earlier single-port kits, this set is specifically configured for the dual-port head geometry and includes the critical "deep" #3 cylinder stud.

This specialized long stud is required for the top-front position of the #3 cylinder (nearest the flywheel), where the engine case casting is deeper to accommodate the oil cooler airflow. The kit provides the correct staggered lengths—including short, medium, and long studs—to ensure proper thread engagement and even clamping force across both cylinder heads. Manufactured from high-tensile steel, these studs are designed to maintain torque settings through thousands of heat cycles without stretching.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Placement of the "Deep" Stud: The 9th long stud in the kit must be installed in the #3 cylinder, top-inner position. If a shorter stud is used here, you will not have enough thread engagement, leading to a pulled stud.

  • Installation Depth: Thread the studs into the case until they "bottom out" lightly, then back them off a quarter-turn. Do not over-torque the studs into the magnesium case; the clamping force is generated by the head nut, not the case-side thread.

  • Torque Sequence: Always follow the factory two-stage torque pattern. Typically, this is an initial take-up at 7 ft-lb, followed by a final torque of 18 ft-lb for 8mm studs.

  • Lubrication: Apply a small amount of engine oil to the top threads and the mating surface of the washers before torqueing to ensure an accurate pressure reading.
