Brake Master Cylinder (ATE) – 311-611-015J

The 311-611-015J is the definitive choice for a high-standard brake restoration. In a Type 3, the master cylinder is tucked away and subject to moisture accumulation if the vehicle sits. A failing master cylinder often presents as a pedal that slowly sinks to the floor while at a stop light. Because brakes are a "single point of failure" safety item, choosing the ATE brand ensures you are getting the same metallurgy and rubber quality that the car had on the showroom floor.

This cylinder is compatible with both disc-brake and drum-brake front ends used during the 1967–1973 production years, provided the vehicle is still using the factory-style hydraulic layout.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility

VW Type 3 (Fastback, Squareback, Notchback):

  • 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Bench Bleeding: Always "bench bleed" the master cylinder before installing it on the car. This involves looping lines back into the reservoir to remove air from the internal chambers. If you skip this, it can be nearly impossible to get a firm pedal using standard bleeding methods.

  • New Grommets & Switches: When replacing the master cylinder, it is best practice to install new  Brake Light Switches (113-945-515G). Old switches often leak through the electrical terminals once disturbed.

  • Flush the Lines: Since you are opening the system, perform a full flush with fresh DOT 3 Brake Fluid. Old fluid contains moisture that will cause your new ATE cylinder to pit and fail prematurely.
