VW Front Torsion Arm Bushing – 111-401-315

The 111-401-315 is a precision-engineered bushing designed for the King and Link Pin front axle beams of early air-cooled Volkswagens. These bushings are pressed into the ends of the axle beam tubes to provide a smooth, low-friction bearing surface for the torsion arms. By maintaining the vertical alignment of the torsion arms, these bushings ensure that your suspension travels smoothly through its range of motion without binding or excessive "slop."

Over decades of use, the original metal or fiber bushings can wear down, leading to a loose feeling in the steering, uneven tire wear, and audible clunking sounds when driving over uneven surfaces. Replacing worn units with the 111-401-315 is a vital step in any front-end rebuild, restoring the tight, predictable handling characteristics that these early Volkswagens were known for. These are manufactured to exact tolerances to ensure a proper press-fit and long-term durability.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility This bushing is designed specifically for the King Pin style front end:

VW Beetle (Standard):

  • 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965

VW Karmann Ghia:

  • 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965

Product Highlights & Features Precision Press-Fit: Engineered to the original factory dimensions to ensure the bushing remains securely seated within the axle beam tube.

Reduced Friction: Provides a consistent bearing surface for the torsion arm, reducing the effort required for suspension movement and steering.

Durable Construction: Built to withstand the constant oscillating loads and road vibrations inherent in daily driving.

Essential Restoration Component: A must-have part when performing a complete Link Pin front-end overhaul to eliminate play in the suspension arms.

Technical Specifications Part Number: 111-401-315

Placement: Front Axle Beam (Outer)

Application: King and Link Pin Beams

Quantity: Sold Individually (Four required per vehicle)

Installation & Maintenance Tips Professional Installation Recommended: These bushings require a specialized puller for removal and a press for installation. Attempting to "hammer" them in can easily distort the bushing, leading to a bound-up suspension.

Check for Beam Wear: Before installing new bushings, inspect the inner surface of the axle beam tubes. if the tubes are heavily pitted or rusted, the new bushings may not seat correctly.

Lubrication is Vital: Use a high-quality chassis grease during installation and ensure your beam’s grease nipples (zerk fittings) are clear. Regular greasing every 3,000 miles is required to keep these bushings from wearing prematurely.

Ream if Necessary: Depending on the manufacturer, some bushings may require a slight reaming after being pressed into the beam to ensure the torsion arm slides in with the perfect amount of clearance.
