Front Brake Rotor (Early 2WD) – 251-407-617A

The 251-407-617A is a critical safety component for early Vanagon owners. Over time, these rotors can develop "pulsation" due to thickness variation or overheating (warping), which significantly reduces braking efficiency. Because the 1980–1985 Vanagons rely on a specific caliper and pad offset, using the correct "A" suffix rotor is essential to ensure proper alignment within the brake system.

When replacing these rotors, it is standard practice to install new wheel bearings (Inner & Outer) and seals at the same time, as the old bearing races cannot be easily transferred to the new hub assembly without risk of damage.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility

VW Vanagon (2WD Only):

  • 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985

Product Highlights & Features

  • Premium Cast Iron: Balanced and precision-ground to minimize vibration and provide a smooth contact surface for new brake pads.

  • Direct Replacement: Meets or exceeds original Volkswagen specifications for thickness and metallurgy.

  • Safety First: Sold individually, but always recommended to be replaced in pairs (Left and Right) to ensure equalized braking force across the front axle.

Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: 251-407-617A

  • Position: Front (Left or Right)

  • Lug Pattern: 5x112mm

  • Threading: M14 x 1.5

  • Type: Solid (Non-Vented) Hub/Rotor Assembly

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Bearing Race Installation: The new rotor does not come with bearing races installed. You must use a Race and Seal Driver to press the new races into the hub. Never use a hammer directly on the race surface, as this will cause premature bearing failure.

  • Grease Specification: Use a high-quality, high-temperature Wheel Bearing Grease. Pack the bearings thoroughly using a bearing packer or the "palm of the hand" method to ensure no air pockets remain inside the bearing cage.

  • Clean the Surface: New rotors are shipped with a protective oil coating to prevent rust. Before installing the brake pads, use a dedicated Brake Parts Cleaner to remove every trace of oil from the rotor faces.
