Front Disc Brake Caliper Rebuild Kit (1-Pin ATE) – 111-698-471

Restore the safety and precision of your braking system with this Front Brake Caliper Rebuild Kit. This kit is essential for maintaining the ATE brand 1-pin style calipers originally found on the Karmann Ghia and frequently used in disc brake conversions for the VW Beetle. Over time, heat and moisture cause internal seals to perish, leading to "sticky" pistons or fluid leaks. This kit provides the high-quality rubber components needed to overhaul one caliper housing.

The kit is designed specifically for calipers using a single bridge pin to hold the brake pads in place (often referred to as "Square Pad" calipers). It includes precision-molded piston seals and external dust boots designed to withstand the high temperatures and chemical demands of modern DOT 3 and DOT 4 brake fluids. Rebuilding your original German-cast calipers is often a superior choice to installing modern, low-cost replacements, as it preserves the original braking geometry and component quality.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility

This kit fits factory ATE 1-pin calipers (40mm piston) continuously across these years:

VW Karmann Ghia:

1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972

VW Beetle (Standard)

  • 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977 (Fits only if retrofitted with 1-pin disc brake conversion kits, not the more common 2 pin calipers in most disc brake kits)

VW Super Beetle:

  • 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979 (Fits only if retrofitted with 1-pin disc brake conversion kits, not the more common 2 pin calipers in most disc brake kits)

Product Highlights & Features

  • OEM Specification Seals: High-quality EPDM rubber seals provide a leak-proof pressure barrier while remaining flexible under extreme braking heat.

  • 40mm Piston Support: Specifically sized for the common 40mm ATE piston found on early disc-equipped air-cooled Volkswagens.

  • Complete Hardware Included: Every kit comes with the main pressure seals, dust boots, and the metal retaining clips required for one side.

  • Preserves Original Parts: Allows for the professional restoration of vintage ATE or Girling 1-pin calipers, maintaining the vehicle's classic integrity.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Confirm Your Caliper: Because many Volkswagens have been modified over the last 50 years, always verify your caliper type before ordering. Look at the brake pads: if they are held by one pin in the center, this is your kit. If there are two pins, you require part 111-698-471B.

  • Cleanliness is Critical: Use only brake cleaner to prep the caliper bores. Never use petroleum-based solvents (like gasoline or degreaser) to clean internal brake parts, as they will cause the new rubber seals to swell and fail immediately.

  • The "Air Pop" Technique: To remove the pistons for rebuilding, you can use a small amount of compressed air through the brake line port. Always wrap the caliper in a heavy rag and place a block of wood in the center to catch the piston safely as it exits the bore.

  • Hone the Bores: If you find light surface rust or "varnish" inside the caliper bore, use a fine-grit brake hone or 1000-grit wet sandpaper with brake fluid to smooth the surface before installing the new seals.
