Ignition Points – 01-013X
Ensure your transition-era Volkswagen runs with factory-spec precision using the 01-013X Ignition Points. These mechanical contact points are the correct choice for the specific distributors used during the late 1960s, matching the requirements of the early 1600cc dual-relief engines and 12-volt electrical systems. These points act as the critical switch for your ignition coil; if they are burnt or incorrectly gapped, your engine will suffer from hesitation, poor fuel economy, and difficult hot-restarting.
The 01-013X is engineered to provide a stable dwell angle throughout the RPM range, ensuring the coil has sufficient "saturation time" to produce a powerful spark. Featuring a durable, low-friction rubbing block and high-conductivity contact surfaces, these points are designed to resist the electrical arcing that commonly leads to "pitting" in lesser-quality ignition components.
Detailed Vehicle Compatibility
These points are a direct fit for the original equipment distributors continuously across these years:
VW Beetle (Standard):
- 1968, 1969, 1970
VW Bus (Type 2):
- 1968, 1969, 1970
VW Karmann Ghia:
- 1968, 1969, 1970
Product Highlights & Features
-
Precision Timing: Designed specifically for the internal advance plates used in 1968-1970 Bosch-style vacuum-advance distributors.
-
Tungsten-Style Contacts: Utilizes high-performance contact material to prevent "mountain and valley" wear patterns caused by electrical transfer.
-
Optimized Tension: Features a high-quality spring arm that prevents "point bounce" at higher engine speeds, ensuring consistent performance on the highway.
-
Direct Replacement: No modifications required; slides directly onto the distributor's pivot pin for a perfect, centered fit against the cam.

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
The Cardstock Swipe: Before starting the engine for the first time, pull a clean piece of business card or thick paper through the closed contacts. This removes the invisible film of anti-corrosive oil applied during manufacturing, which would otherwise burn and ruin the points instantly.
-
Proper Lubrication: Apply a tiny amount of distributor cam grease to the distributor cam lobes. A "dry" cam will sand down the plastic rubbing block on your new points in less than 500 miles, causing the gap to close and the engine to stall.
-
Dwell vs. Gap: While you can set these with a feeler gauge to 0.016" (0.40mm), the most accurate method is using a dwell meter to achieve the factory-specified 44° to 50° of dwell.
-
Check the Condenser: If your old points were heavily pitted or blue in color, your Ignition Condenser has likely failed. Always replace the condenser when installing new points to ensure they last their full service life.
