VW Fuel Pump Rebuild Kit (40hp) – 111-198-553
Bring your original factory fuel pump back to life with this comprehensive Fuel Pump Rebuild Kit. Designed specifically for the 40hp 1200cc engine, this kit is for the early-style pumps identifiable by their threaded fuel outlet rather than a slip-on hose barb. Over time, modern ethanol-blended fuels cause original rubber diaphragms to stiffen, crack, or leak, leading to poor engine performance or dangerous fuel leaks into the engine oil.
The 111-198-553 kit includes a high-grade, fuel-resistant diaphragm, internal check valves, and the necessary sealing gaskets for both the pump body and the mounting flange. Rebuilding your original German pump is often preferred over buying a modern replacement, as it maintains the correct fuel pressure and factory appearance of your vintage engine bay.
Detailed Vehicle Compatibility This kit fits the 40hp (1200cc) threaded-style fuel pumps found on these models:
VW Beetle (Standard):
-
1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965
VW Bus (Type 2):
-

VW Karmann Ghia:
-
1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965
Product Highlights & Features Threaded Outlet Specific: Precision-matched components for the early 40hp Solex-style pumps with screw-in fuel line fittings.
Ethanol-Ready Diaphragm: Constructed from modern synthetic materials designed to withstand the corrosive effects of today's E10 pump gas.
Restores Fuel Pressure: Includes fresh check valves and a high-tension spring to ensure your carburetor receives a steady, consistent flow of fuel.
Complete Gasket Set: Provides the essential base gaskets to prevent oil from leaking out of the fuel pump pedestal and onto your engine tin.
Technical Specifications Part Number: 111-198-553
Application: 40hp 1200cc (Threaded Outlet Only)
Kit Contents: Diaphragm, 2 Check Valves, Base Gaskets, O-Rings
Material: Nitrile Rubber and Fiber Composites
Installation & Maintenance Tips Clean the Valves: When replacing the internal check valves, ensure the pump housing seats are perfectly clean. A tiny speck of dirt can prevent the valve from seating, causing the pump to lose its prime.
Check the Pushrod: While the pump is off, inspect your fuel pump pushrod. For 40hp engines, the pushrod should be approximately 110mm (4.33 inches) long. If it is worn shorter, the pump will not provide full volume.
The "Sniff" Test: If you are rebuilding the pump because your oil smells like gasoline, your diaphragm has likely failed. Always change your oil immediately after installing this kit to ensure no fuel remains in the crankcase.
Don't Over-Tighten: The top screws of the fuel pump body should be tightened in a "star" pattern to ensure even pressure on the diaphragm. Do not over-torque, as the pot-metal housing can warp easily.
