VW Stock Left Front Spindle – 111-405-301
The 111-405-301 is a high-strength, forged steel spindle designed for the driver-side (left) front suspension of early air-cooled Volkswagens. As a primary component of the "King and Link Pin" axle beam, the spindle is the pivot point for your steering and the mounting surface for your wheel bearings, brake backing plates, and drums. This is a stock-height component, engineered to maintain the original factory ride height and suspension geometry.
Spindles are often replaced due to damaged bearing surfaces ("spun" bearings), bent steering arms from curb impacts, or stripped threads on the spindle snout. The 111-405-301 features the correct dimensions for early small-diameter bearings and is machined specifically to accept the King Pin pin and shims. Replacing a compromised spindle is essential for safe steering response and proper tire alignment.
Detailed Vehicle Compatibility This spindle is correct for King and Link Pin front ends only:

Product Highlights & Features Forged Steel Strength: Manufactured using heavy-duty forging processes to ensure the spindle can handle the stresses of steering and braking without flex or fatigue.
Precision Bearing Snout: Machined to exact factory tolerances to ensure your inner and outer wheel bearings seat perfectly, preventing vibration and premature bearing failure.
OE Geometry: Maintains the factory-intended scrub radius and steering arm angle for predictable, light-effort steering.
Integrated Steering Arm: Features the correct tapered hole for the tie-rod end, ensuring a secure connection to your steering linkage.
Technical Specifications Part Number: 111-405-301
Side: Left (Driver Side)
Suspension Type: King and Link Pin
Material: Forged Steel
Installation & Maintenance Tips King Pin Fitting: This spindle must be fitted to the carrier using a King Pin Rebuild Kit. This process requires a specialized reamer to ensure the bushings are perfectly sized for the pin; a local machine shop is often required for this task.
Bearing Inspection: Never install old bearings on a new spindle. Always use new wheel bearings and high-quality grease to ensure the freshly machined snout isn't damaged during the first drive.
Thrust Washer Alignment: Pay close attention to the orientation of the thrust washers and shims during assembly. Improper shimming will lead to "stiff" steering or excessive play in the front end.
Speedometer Cable: On most models, the left-side spindle snout is hollowed out to allow the speedometer cable to pass through and connect to the dust cap. Ensure this passage is clean and free of old grease before inserting the cable.
