VW Rear Apron (Scratch & Dent) – 111-813-301JX
The 111-813-301JX is a "Scratch & Dent" version of the standard 1968–1974 rear valance. This panel is functionally and structurally identical to the premium 301J unit but has been heavily discounted due to minor cosmetic imperfections sustained during transit or manufacturing. These imperfections typically include small surface dings, shallow dents, or scuffs in the black transport coating.
For the budget-conscious restorer or for a vehicle intended to be a "driver" rather than a show car, this panel offers a significant cost saving. Since bodywork, filling, and sanding are standard steps in the installation of any weld-in sheet metal, the minor flaws on this "X" suffix part are easily corrected during the normal prep-and-paint process. It remains a full-thickness, heavy-gauge steel panel that provides the essential engine cooling barrier and bumper mounting points required for late-model Beetles.
Detailed Vehicle Compatibility This panel is a direct-fit replacement for the following Type 1 models:
VW Beetle (Standard):
-
1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974
VW Super Beetle:
-
1971, 1972, 1973, 1974

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Body Filler Ready: Because you will likely be using a skim coat of body filler to blend the apron seams into the quarter panels anyway, these minor dents usually add zero extra labor to the project.
-
Primer Removal: As with the standard version, the black shipping coating must be sanded off at all weld points to ensure a clean, deep weld.
-
Straightening: Most "dent and scratch" imperfections can be quickly corrected with a hammer and dolly set before the panel is even welded to the car.
-
Check the Latch Area: Ensure that any minor dings near the decklid latch recess haven't slightly deformed the opening; test the latch fitment before final welding.
