87mm Piston & Liner Set (1641cc) – 311-198-06987T

The 311-198-06987T is the easiest way to add a noticeable boost in torque and horsepower to your classic Volkswagen. By increasing the bore from the stock 85.5mm to 87mm, you effectively bump your displacement to 1641cc. Because these are "slip-in" style, they are a favorite for garage builders looking for extra performance during a routine top-end refresh without the expense of a machine shop.

The cylinders are made from durable cast iron for excellent heat dissipation and wear resistance, while the pistons feature a standard 39.50mm compression height, keeping your geometry close to factory specifications.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Check Deck Height: Even with slip-in kits, you must measure your Deck Height (the distance from the top of the piston to the top of the cylinder) to ensure your compression ratio is safe for the fuel you intend to use.

  • Ring End Gap: Always "file-fit" or at least verify the Piston Ring End Gap before installation. Never assume rings are pre-gapped out of the box.

  • Break-In Procedure: Use a high-zinc break-in oil and follow a strict break-in heat cycle to ensure the rings seat properly against the new cast-iron cylinder walls.
