Long-Shaft Sunroof Gear Assembly – 117-877-403A

The 117-877-403A is the mechanical "heart" of the manual sunroof system. Over decades, the original pot-metal gears can strip or the internal bushings can fail, making the sunroof difficult or impossible to operate. This replacement assembly restores the smooth, effortless cranking action your VW had when it left the factory.

This "Long-Shaft" version is distinct from the shorter versions used in later Beetles. It provides the necessary clearance to pass through the thicker roof bracing and headliner materials found in mid-60s Bugs and the expansive roof of the Bay Window Bus.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility

VW Beetle (Sunroof Models):

  • 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967

VW Transporter (Bus / Type 2 with Factory Sunroof):

  • 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979

Product Highlights & Features

  • Factory Mounting Points: Designed to bolt directly into the original roof substructure without the need for drilling or modification.

  • Compatible with Stock Handles: The splined shaft is designed to accept your original factory sunroof crank handle or high-quality aftermarket replacements.

Technical Specifications

  • Application: Manual Sunroof Systems only

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Cable Inspection: Before installing the new gear, inspect your sunroof cables. If they are frayed or clogged with old, hardened grease, they can put excessive strain on the new gear and cause premature failure.

  • Proper Lubrication: Use a high-quality lithium-based grease or a specialized sunroof track lubricant. Avoid "sticky" greases that attract dirt and debris, which can grind down the gear teeth over time.

  • Handle Tightening: Ensure the set-screw on your sunroof handle is properly tightened onto the splined shaft to prevent rounding out the splines on either the handle or the gear.
