Rear Wheel Cylinder – 211-611-047FBR

The 211-611-047FBR is the go-to hydraulic component for maintaining the rear drum brakes on late-model Volkswagens. Unlike the smaller cylinders found on Beetles, this unit is built to handle the higher pressures generated by the vacuum-assisted braking systems found in 1970s and 80s transporters.

When your brake pedal feels "spongy" or you notice a drop in the master cylinder fluid level, the wheel cylinders are the first place to check. If the rubber dust boots are wet with brake fluid, the internal seals have failed and the unit must be replaced.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility

VW Bus (Type 2 / Transporter / Kombi):

  • 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979

VW Vanagon (Type 25):

  • 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991

Product Highlights & Features

  • Cast Iron Body: Built with a rugged housing to resist heat-induced warping and high hydraulic pressures.

  • Pre-Assembled: Includes the internal pistons, springs, and external rubber dust boots for a ready-to-install solution.

  • Anti-Corrosive Treatment: The cylinder bore is precision-honed and treated to resist the internal pitting caused by aged, moisture-laden brake fluid.

Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: 211-611-047FBR

  • Position: Rear Left or Right

  • System: Drum Brake Hydraulics

  • Fluid Type: Compatible with DOT 3 or DOT 4

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Replace in Pairs: To ensure even braking performance and prevent the vehicle from pulling, always replace both rear wheel cylinders at the same time.

  • Brake Bleeding: After installation, the entire braking system must be bled to remove air bubbles. Start with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder (the passenger rear) and work your way forward.

  • Fluid Flush: Brake fluid is hygroscopic (it absorbs water). To prevent your new cylinders from rusting internally, perform a full brake fluid flush every 2 years.
