Connecting Rod Bearings (.50mm Oversize) – 021-105-713A
Ensure the internal longevity of your engine rebuild with these .50mm (0.020") Oversized Connecting Rod Bearings. Designed specifically for the Volkswagen Type 4 "pancake" engine and its Porsche counterparts, these bearings are required when a crankshaft has been professionally reground to its first undersize. By providing a precision-machined surface for the connecting rods to rotate upon, these bearings maintain the critical oil film necessary to prevent metal-on-metal contact at high RPMs.
These bearings are engineered to handle the unique oiling requirements and thermal loads of the 1.7L, 1.8L air-cooled powerplants. Each bearing shell is constructed from high-strength multi-layer alloy, featuring a steel backing for structural integrity and a soft babbitt overlay to embed any microscopic contaminants. Using oversized bearings allows you to save an original crankshaft that has suffered minor journal wear, returning it to factory-smooth operation.

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Measure Twice: Before ordering, use a calibrated micrometer to verify your crankshaft journals have been ground to exactly .50mm undersize. Installing oversized bearings on a standard-sized crank will cause the engine to seize instantly.
-
Cleanliness is Critical: Even a single speck of dust behind the bearing shell can create a "high spot" that leads to premature bearing failure. Clean the rod bores and crankshaft journals with lint-free wipes before assembly.
-
Assembly Lube: Apply a generous amount of high-pressure engine assembly lube to the bearing faces. Do not use standard engine oil for the initial build, as it may drain away before the engine builds oil pressure on its first start.
