Bosch Ignition Points – 01-009

Ensure your vintage engine runs with factory precision using Bosch 01-009 Ignition Points. These mechanical contact points are the correct specification for the original vacuum-advance distributors equipped on mid-60s Volkswagens. High-quality tungsten contact surfaces provide maximum resistance to electrical pitting and arc erosion, ensuring a crisp signal to your ignition coil for reliable starting and smooth acceleration.

As a high-wear item within the distributor, points require periodic replacement to maintain the correct dwell angle. These Bosch units feature a precision-ground rubbing block designed to minimize friction against the distributor cam, preventing timing drift over time. Whether you are performing a seasonal tune-up or troubleshooting a persistent misfire, using genuine Bosch components preserves the authentic performance of your air-cooled drivetrain.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility

These points are designed for the original equipment distributors found continuously across these years:

VW Beetle (Standard):

  • 1965, 1966, 1967

VW Karmann Ghia:

  • 1965, 1966, 1967

VW Type 3:

  • 1965, 1966, 1967

VW Bus (Type 2):

  • 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967

Product Highlights & Features

  • OEM Reliability: Manufactured by Bosch to the exact specifications used by Volkswagen during the 1960s production era.

  • Heavy-Duty Contacts: Pure tungsten contact points offer superior conductivity and a longer service life compared to generic alternatives.

  • Stable Dwell Angle: The reinforced rubbing block resists premature wear, keeping your ignition timing consistent between service intervals.

  • Precision Fit: Engineered specifically for the early "large diameter" distributor housings used before the 1968 model year transition.

Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: 01-009

  • Manufacturer: Bosch

  • Material: Steel with Tungsten Contacts

  • Connection Type: Spring-tension terminal

  • Application: Original Vacuum-Advance Distributors

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Setting the Gap: For these specific years, the standard points gap should be set to 0.016" (0.40mm) when the rubbing block is on the highest point of the distributor cam lobe.

  • Lubrication is Critical: Apply a small, pea-sized amount of specialized distributor cam grease to the lobes. Without lubrication, the plastic rubbing block will wear down rapidly, causing the points to stay closed and the engine to stall.

  • Clean Before Use: Use a piece of clean cardstock to "wipe" the contact surfaces before installation. Even microscopic amounts of oil from your fingers can cause the points to burn prematurely.

  • Verify the Condenser: Always inspect your Ignition Condenser when replacing points. A failing condenser often manifests as a "mountain and valley" pit on the point contacts; if you see this, replace the condenser immediately to protect your new points.
