VW Front Outer Wheel Bearing – 111-405-647X

The 111-405-647X is a replacement front outer wheel bearing designed for the early "King and Link Pin" suspension systems found on air-cooled Volkswagens. This small but critical tapered roller bearing sits at the outermost position of the front spindle, supporting the weight of the vehicle while allowing the brake drum to rotate with minimal friction. Proper bearing function is vital for smooth steering, even tire wear, and overall vehicle safety.

Worn or pitted wheel bearings often manifest as a high-pitched humming or growling noise that changes with vehicle speed. If left unaddressed, a failing bearing can generate excessive heat, potentially damaging the spindle snout or causing the wheel to lock up. This China-manufactured version offers a cost-effective solution for standard daily driving and restoration projects, providing a factory-spec fit for the early small-diameter spindles.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility This bearing is specifically for early King and Link Pin front ends:

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Pack Before Installation: Never install a wheel bearing "dry." You must thoroughly pack the bearing with high-quality, high-temperature wheel bearing grease until it is forced through the rollers and cage.

  • Install New Races: It is highly recommended to install the matching new race (cup) into the drum when replacing the bearing. Running a new bearing on an old, worn race will lead to rapid failure.

  • Proper Preload: When tightening the spindle nut, do not over-tighten. The standard method is to tighten the nut while spinning the drum until it resists, then back it off about 1/4 turn until the thrust washer can just be moved with the tip of a screwdriver.

  • Replace in Pairs: While sold individually, it is best practice to replace both the inner and outer bearings on the wheel at the same time to ensure consistent performance.
