Clutch Fork Shaft Seal – 020-141-733

Prevent transmission fluid loss and protect your clutch assembly with the 020-141-733 Clutch Fork Shaft Seal. This specialized radial shaft seal (18x27x5.5mm) is designed to fit the point where the clutch release lever shaft (also known as the clutch fork shaft) exits the manual transmission housing. It is a critical component for the popular 020 style transaxles found in nearly three decades of water-cooled Volkswagens, ensuring that gear oil stays within the case and off your clutch disc.

A failing selector or release shaft seal is a common source of "mystery" leaks that appear on the side or bottom of the transmission. If left unaddressed, gear oil can contaminate the clutch friction surface, leading to slipping and premature failure of the entire clutch kit. This high-quality replacement features a NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber) construction and a built-in dust lip to keep road debris away from the sealing surface, providing long-term reliability for both daily drivers and restoration projects.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Install After Shaft: To prevent tearing the delicate inner sealing lip, it is highly recommended to slide the seal into place after the selector shaft or clutch fork shaft has been installed.

  • Use a Deep Socket: Use a deep socket or a dedicated seal driver that matches the outer diameter (27mm) of the seal. This allows you to press the seal in straight without putting pressure on the center lip.

  • Lubricate the Lip: Before installation, apply a small amount of clean gear oil or assembly lube to the inner lip of the seal to prevent "dry start" wear during the first few shifts.

  • Clean the Shaft: Inspect the metal shaft where the seal will ride. If there are deep grooves or rust, a new seal may still leak; use an ultra-fine abrasive pad (like Scotch-Brite) to polish the shaft surface before assembly.
