Front Crankshaft Seal (Type 4) – 021-105-247A

The 021-105-247A is a vital maintenance component for the 1700cc, 1800cc, and 2000cc engines. Over time, heat and engine vibration cause the original rubber seal to harden and lose its flexibility, leading to oil seeping behind the crank pulley. This not only creates a mess in the engine bay but can lead to oil contamination of the drive belts, causing them to slip or fail prematurely.

This seal features a spring-loaded inner lip that maintains constant pressure against the crankshaft snout, ensuring a leak-free transition even as the engine reaches its maximum operating temperature.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility

VW Bus (Type 2):

  • 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979

Product Highlights & Features

  • Double-Lip Design: Features a primary sealing lip to keep oil in and a secondary dust lip to keep road grime and dirt away from the crankshaft surface.

  • Precision Fit: Engineered to the exact inner and outer diameter specifications of the Type 4 engine case and crankshaft.

  • Resistant to Modern Oils: Formulated to handle modern synthetic and conventional oils without swelling or degrading.

Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: 021-105-247A

  • Location: Front (Pulley Side)

  • Engine Fitment: Type 4 (1.7L, 1.8L, 2.0L)

  • Material: Oil-Resistant Elastomer with Tension Spring

  • Size: 42x62x10

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Lube the Inner Lip: Always apply a small amount of clean engine oil or assembly lube to the inner lip of the seal before sliding the pulley back on. Installing the seal "dry" can cause the rubber to burn and fail within the first few minutes of engine operation.

  • Use a Seal Driver: To ensure the seal is seated perfectly square in the engine case, use a dedicated seal driver or a large socket that matches the outer diameter of the seal. If the seal is installed crooked, it will not provide a reliable seal.
