Clutch Cross Shaft / Throw-Out Bearing Shaft (16mm)
The Clutch Cross Shaft is the critical internal component of your transaxle that physically moves the throw-out bearing to engage and disengage the clutch. This specific "E" suffix version is designed for the transition years of the air-cooled era, featuring a 16mm diameter shaft specifically engineered to work with the guided (sleeved) throw-out bearing systems introduced in the early 1970s.
Key Features:
-
Precision Geometry: Features the factory-correct fork angle to ensure the throw-out bearing travels perfectly straight along the input shaft guide tube.
-
Guided System Compatible: Specifically designed for "late-style" 1971–1972 transaxles that utilize a guide sleeve for the release bearing.
-
Durable Forged Steel: Built to withstand the high-stress rotational force and repeated heat cycles inside the bell housing.
-
Direct Replacement: A drop-in fit for original shafts that have developed worn fork "fingers," bent arms, or wallowed-out splines.
Specifications:
-
Part Number: 113-141-701E
-
Shaft Diameter: 16mm

Vehicle Application & Fitment
This 16mm shaft is unique to the transition period between the early unguided bearings and the later 20mm heavy-duty shafts:
| Vehicle | Model Years |
| VW Beetle & Super Beetle | 1971, 1972 |
| VW Karmann Ghia | 1971, 1972 |
| VW Type 3 (Fastback / Squareback) | 1971, 1972 |
Tech Tip: When replacing this shaft, it is essential to inspect the Cross Shaft Bushings (located in the transaxle case) and the Return Spring. Since the engine must be removed to access this part, most builders also replace the Throw-Out Bearing Clips and the Guide Sleeve Seal at the same time to prevent having to pull the engine again later.
