Clutch Cross Shaft (16mm) – 002-141-701
Ensure reliable gear engagement and a smooth pedal feel with the 002-141-701 Clutch Cross Shaft. This critical transmission component, also known as the clutch operating fork shaft, is the pivot point for your throw-out bearing. When you press the clutch pedal, this shaft rotates to push the release bearing against the pressure plate. Over time, the "fingers" (forks) on the shaft can wear thin, bend, or crack—especially when paired with heavy-duty pressure plates—leading to poor release and difficult shifting.
This 16mm diameter shaft is specifically designed for the early "002" style bell housings found in late 1960s Transporters. It is a precision-manufactured unit intended to replace worn factory shafts that have developed "saddle wear" where the bearing pivots. Replacing a suspect cross shaft during a clutch job is a smart preventative measure to avoid having to pull the engine again later.
Detailed Vehicle Compatibility
This 16mm shaft is specific to the early Bay Window Transporter models continuously across these years:
VW Bus (Type 2):
- 1968, 1969, 1970
Product Highlights & Features

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Inspect the Bushings: While the shaft is out, always check the 16mm bronze or plastic bushings in the bell housing. If they are oval-shaped or worn, the new shaft will vibrate and potentially bind.
-
Lube the Pivot Points: Use a small amount of high-temperature grease on the shaft where it meets the bushings and on the "fingers" where they contact the throw-out bearing. Avoid over-greasing, as excess can find its way onto the clutch disc.
-
Check the Operating Arm: Verify that your external clutch operating arm (where the cable attaches) has a clean, tight fit on the end of the new shaft. If the splines or keyway are wallowed out, the arm may slip.
-
Replace the Clips: Always use new Throw-Out Bearing Clips (111-141-177A) when installing the bearing onto the new fork fingers to ensure it stays securely centered.
