Cylinder Head Heat Deflectors (Pair) – 311-119-317A
The 311-119-317A is a small but mandatory part of any Type 1 engine build. Because they are hidden beneath the heads, they are frequently forgotten during a rebuild. However, running a 1600cc upright engine without these deflectors will result in a "hot-running" motor that can sustain long-term damage during highway driving. These deflectors snap onto the head studs and stay in place by tension once the heads are torqued down.
This pair provides the necessary coverage for both the 1/2 and 3/4 sides of your upright air-cooled engine.

Product Highlights & Features
-
Spring-Steel Tension: Manufactured to be slightly flexible so they can be "snapped" onto the 10mm studs and remain held by friction during the head-mounting process.
-
Optimized Air Deflection: The curved profile is mathematically designed to match the taper of the Type 1 cylinders, forcing air to stay in contact with the cooling fins longer.
-
Corrosion-Resistant Finish: Typically finished in a "Gold Zinc" or Yellow Chromate coating to prevent surface rust from forming in the high-humidity environment of the engine cooling path.

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Check Your Stud Size: If you are building an early 40hp (1200cc) engine, you likely have 8mm studs and will need the 043-prefix version of this part. These 311-prefix deflectors are the larger-hole version for the 10mm studs found on most 1500/1600cc motors.
-
Don't Forget Them: These MUST be installed before you install the push rod tubes and cylinder heads. If the heads are already torqued down, you cannot install these without pulling the heads back off.
-
Avoid "Rattles": Ensure the deflectors are pushed all the way up against the cylinders before sliding the pushrod tubes into place. If they are loose, they can create a persistent metallic vibration that is difficult to locate once the engine is running.
