Rebuilt Starter Motor – SR-19X
Ensure your engine fires up reliably every time with the SR-19X Starter. It is specifically engineered for Volkswagen Vanagons equipped with a manual transmission.
The SR-19X features a 0.8kW power rating and a precision-cut 9-tooth pinion gear. The closed-nose design protects the internal drive mechanism from clutch dust and debris within the bellhousing. A "plug and play" solution for both stock 1.9L and 2.1L engines.
Detailed Vehicle Compatibility
This starter is a direct fit for Volkswagen Vanagons with a manual transmission (Air-cooled, Diesel, and Wasserboxer) continuously across these years:
VW Vanagon:
- 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Bushing Inspection: Before installing the new starter, inspect the starter pilot bushing located inside the transmission bellhousing. A worn or egg-shaped bushing will cause the starter shaft to bind, leading to slow cranking and premature gear wear.
-
Bolt Orientation: When installing, the long mounting bolt should be inserted from the engine side of the flange. It is often easier to have a second person hold the starter in place while the bolts are initially threaded.
-
Electrical Contact: Use a wire brush or sandpaper to clean the mounting surface on the transmission and the battery cable ring terminals. Good metal-to-metal contact is essential for the high-amperage draw of the starter.
-
Solenoid Wiring: Ensure the small "trigger" wire (terminal 50) is pushed firmly onto the solenoid tab. A loose connection here is a common cause of intermittent "click-no-start" issues.
