VW Weld-On Decklid Hinge – 111-827-301

The 111-827-301 is a heavy-duty replacement hinge designed for the engine decklid of the air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. Unlike bolt-on components, this hinge is a weld-on part that attaches directly to the body's rain channel area. It is most commonly used during major body restorations where the original hinge has snapped, become severely seized, or where the surrounding metal has suffered from significant rust perforation.

This hinge is universal, meaning it can be used for either the left or right side of the vehicle. It is manufactured from high-quality raw steel, allowing for clean penetration during the welding process. Because this part provides the primary pivot point for your engine lid, it is essential for achieving proper panel gaps and ensuring the decklid opens and closes smoothly without binding against the bodywork.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility This hinge fits the entire production span of the Type 1 chassis:

  • Essential Restoration Part: The correct solution for repairing "frozen" hinges that have snapped the body-side mounting points.

Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: 111-827-301

  • Material: Raw Stamped Steel

  • Installation: Weld-On

  • Quantity: Sold Individually (2 required per car)

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Measure Twice: Before welding the new hinge in place, bolt it to the decklid first and test the closure. This ensures that the pivot point is perfectly aligned with the other side to prevent a "crooked" lid.

  • Clean the Surface: Ensure all paint and primer are removed from the body's rain channel before welding. Any contamination will lead to a brittle weld that could snap under the tension of the decklid spring.

  • Lubrication: Once welded and painted, apply a drop of light oil or lithium grease to the pivot pin. This prevents the friction that leads to the metal fatigue and snapping common in original 50-year-old hinges.

  • Paint Prep: Since these are raw steel, they must be primed and painted immediately after installation to prevent surface rust from forming in the hinge pivot.
