VW Driver Side Grease Cap (with Speedo Hole) – 111-405-691B

The 111-405-691B is a specialized front hub grease cap designed specifically for the driver's side (left) of late-model air-cooled Volkswagens. Unlike the passenger side, which is solid, this cap features a precision-punched square hole in the center. This opening allows the speedometer cable to pass through the hollow spindle snout and lock into the grease cap via a small retaining clip.

This cap serves two vital roles: it keeps your wheel bearing grease contained within the hub and provides the mechanical link required to spin your speedometer cable as the wheel turns. Over time, these caps can become dented from improper removal, or the square hole can become rounded out, causing your speedometer needle to bounce or stop working entirely. Replacing a damaged cap with the 111-405-691B ensures accurate speed readings and a clean, sealed environment for your front wheel bearings.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility This cap fits models equipped with the later-style "Ball Joint" or Super Beetle front ends:

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Do Not Hammer the Center: When installing the cap, use a grease cap tool or a large socket that contacts the outer rim of the cap. Hammering the center can deform the speedometer hole and prevent the cable from seating correctly.

  • Inspect the Cable Tip: Before installing the cap, check the square end of your speedometer cable. If the cable tip is rounded, it may slip inside the new cap.

  • Use the Correct Clip: Ensure you have the small retaining clip (often a small cotter pin or E-clip) to secure the cable to the outside of the cap once it is pushed through.

  • Clean the Hub: Wipe away old, gritty grease from the hub's mounting surface before pressing the new cap on to ensure an airtight seal.
