Rebuilt Starter (Automatic) – SR-18X
The SR-18X is the heavy-duty solution for automatic Vanagons that are struggling with slow cranking or intermittent "clicking." Because the automatic transmission requires a specific torque profile to turn the engine over against the drag of the torque converter, using a high-quality unit is essential. This starter provides a reliable 0.8kW of power, ensuring quick starts even in cold weather.
This unit is a direct replacement for original equipment numbers 003-911-023E and 003-911-023EX.

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
The "Late 81" Switch: 1981 was a transition year. If you have an 81 Vanagon, verify that your current starter matches the closed-nose design. This SR-18X is the correct fit for Late 1981 through 1983 automatic models.
-
Check the Solenoid Wire: The small "trigger" wire (Terminal 50) often becomes brittle and corroded on Vanagons. While replacing the starter, it is highly recommended to crimp on a new, clean connector to ensure the solenoid receives full battery voltage.
-
