Rebuilt Starter (Automatic) – SR-18X

The SR-18X is the heavy-duty solution for automatic Vanagons that are struggling with slow cranking or intermittent "clicking." Because the automatic transmission requires a specific torque profile to turn the engine over against the drag of the torque converter, using a high-quality unit is essential. This starter provides a reliable 0.8kW of power, ensuring quick starts even in cold weather.

This unit is a direct replacement for original equipment numbers 003-911-023E and 003-911-023EX.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility

VW Vanagon (Automatic Transmission Only):

1981, 1982, 1983

Product Highlights & Features

  • Heavy-Duty Solenoid: Equipped with a premium solenoid featuring high-temperature caps to prevent "heat soak" failure, a common issue in rear-engine Volkswagens.

  • Precision Machined Armature: Features an upgraded steel shaft for improved durability and a precision-ground commutator for consistent electrical contact.

  • Environmentally Tested: 100% factory tested to ensure it performs equal to or better than the original equipment part it replaces.

Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: SR-18X

  • Voltage: 12V

  • Power Rating: 0.8kW

  • Nose Type: Closed Nose (Self-Guided)

  • Rotation: Counter-Clockwise

  • Condition: Remanufactured (Standard Core Charge applies*)

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • The "Late 81" Switch: 1981 was a transition year. If you have an 81 Vanagon, verify that your current starter matches the closed-nose design. This SR-18X is the correct fit for Late 1981 through 1983 automatic models.

  • Check the Solenoid Wire: The small "trigger" wire (Terminal 50) often becomes brittle and corroded on Vanagons. While replacing the starter, it is highly recommended to crimp on a new, clean connector to ensure the solenoid receives full battery voltage.

  • Core Refund: Since this is a remanufactured unit, be sure to keep the original box for your Core Refund when you return your old, rebuildable starter in the provided packaging.

*Core Information

  • *Core Return: Return needs to be in rebuildable condition and of the same style i.e. Semi-Auto starter core for a Semi-Auto Rebuilt unit. Refund for core charge will be processed after received and cleared good for rebuild.
  • *Core Charge: Core charge will be added to your order after checkout and will need to be paid before your order will ship.
