VW Rear Apron (Late Model Style) – 111-813-301J
The 111-813-301J is a structural weld-in sheet metal panel designed for the rear of the late-model air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. This apron is the factory-correct replacement for the "flat" style rear valance used during the late 60s and early 70s. It provides the necessary mounting points for the rear bumper brackets and features the proper recess for the push-button decklid latch mechanism found on these years.
Beyond aesthetics, this rear apron is a critical component of your vehicle's cooling system. It acts as the final barrier that prevents hot exhaust air from being recirculated back into the engine's cooling fan. If this panel is rusted or improperly fitted, the engine can suffer from chronic overheating. This version is stamped from heavy-gauge steel and typically features a black anti-rust coating for protection during shipping and storage.
Detailed Vehicle Compatibility This panel is a direct-fit replacement for the following Type 1 models:
VW Beetle (Standard):
-
1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974
VW Super Beetle:
-

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Exhaust Cut-Outs: Verify your exhaust pipe exits. Most replacement aprons feature the standard dual-pipe cut-outs; if you are running a custom single-exit or "tuck-away" exhaust, you may want to modify the lower lip.
-
Preparation: You must remove the black transport coating from all weld-points before installation to ensure a clean, strong bond.
-
Seal Channel: Note that many replacement aprons do not include the inner seal channel/lip; you may need to salvage your original channel or purchase a separate weld-on seal channel (Part # 111-813-311).
-
Fitment Check: Temporarily mount your fenders and decklid before final welding. The gaps between the apron, fenders, and decklid are the most visible lines on the car and require precise alignment.
