Vanagon Front Upper Ball Joint – 251-407-361

The 251-407-361 is a vital pivot point in the Vanagon's front suspension assembly. It connects the upper control arm to the steering spindle, allowing the wheel to move vertically while maintaining the correct camber angle. Because the Vanagon carries a significant amount of weight over the front wheels, these joints are subject to high stress and should be inspected for play or "clunking" sounds during every service.

Over time, the protective rubber boots on original joints can crack, leading to the loss of lubricant and the entry of road grit. Replacing a worn upper ball joint is one of the most effective ways to eliminate steering wander and prevent uneven tire wear.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Hardware: It is highly recommended to use new mounting hardware (bolts and nuts) when replacing the joint to ensure the assembly remains secure.

  • Torque Settings: Tighten the upper ball joint to spindle nut to 80 ft-lbs and the mounting bolts to 44 ft-lbs.

  • Alignment: While the upper ball joint is a bolt-on part, any work on the front suspension can slightly alter your alignment. It is best practice to have the camber and toe checked after installation.
