VW Fuel Door Release Pull Handle – 111-823-461A
The 111-823-461A is the updated remote fuel door release handle designed for late-model air-cooled Volkswagens. Mounted inside the glove box, this handle is the user interface for the cable-driven gas flap release system. Unlike the earlier version, the "A" revision is engineered specifically for the modified glove box and dash layouts of the 1970s, including the curved dash of the 1973+ Super Beetles.
Constructed from impact-resistant black plastic, this handle is designed to withstand the repeated tension required to pop the fuel door open. Over time, heat and UV exposure inside the glove box can make the original plastic brittle, leading to the handle snapping off the cable. This high-quality reproduction restores the factory look and feel, ensuring you don't have to resort to prying your fuel door open with a screwdriver at the gas station.
Detailed Vehicle Compatibility This handle is correct for the following late-production Type 1 models:

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Lubricate the Cable: If your original handle snapped, there is a high chance your release cable is partially seized. Apply a dry graphite lubricant or a light machine oil to the cable housing before installing the new handle.
-
Check the Catch: Ensure the fuel door latch mechanism is clean. If the latch is gummed up with old grease, it puts excessive stress on the new plastic handle.
-
Don't Over-Tighten: If your cable uses a set screw to hold the handle, tighten it just enough to be secure. Over-tightening can crack the new plastic housing.
-
Spring Tension: A weak Fuel Door Spring (111-809-931) can make it feel like the
