Fuel Injection Intake Manifold Boot – 043-133-241
The 043-133-241 is a critical rubber intake coupling designed specifically for air-cooled Volkswagen engines equipped with L-Jetronic fuel injection. This boot connects the intake air distributor (the central plenum) to the intake manifold runners. Because fuel-injected engines rely on precise air measurement via the Air Flow Meter, any crack or leak in this boot allows "unmeasured" air to enter the engine.
This unmeasured air causes the engine to run lean, leading to symptoms such as a wandering idle, hesitation upon acceleration, and overheating. Over decades of use, the original rubber boots succumb to engine bay heat and fuel vapors, losing their flexibility and developing splits in the bellows. Replacing these boots is a mandatory step in restoring the drivability of a fuel-injected Beetle or Bus.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

Clamp Inspection: Always use the correct size hose clamps to ensure even pressure around the circumference of the boot. Do not over-tighten, as this can cut into the new rubber.

The "Soap Trick": If the boot is difficult to slide onto the aluminum manifold, apply a small amount of soapy water to the inside edge. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants which can rot the rubber.

Visual Check: During routine oil changes, inspect the folds of the bellows. Often, cracks are hidden inside the ribs and only open up when the engine twists under torque.

Plenum Alignment: Ensure the intake plenum is properly supported by its brackets; if the plenum is sagging, it puts constant tension on the 043-133-241 boots, causing them to fail prematurely.
