Air Intake Boot (AFM to Throttle Body) – 071-129-967

The 071-129-967 is the primary intake bellows for the L-Jetronic fuel injection system. Because it is located after the Air Flow Meter, any crack in the rubber "ribs" of this boot allows unmeasured air to enter the throttle body. This results in an immediate lean condition, causing the engine to hesitate, pop through the intake, or die at idle.

This boot is specifically molded with a larger diameter on one end for the AFM and a smaller diameter for the throttle body. Its bellows design allows it to flex as the engine moves under load without slipping off its mounting surfaces.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility

Volkswagen Vanagon:

  • 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983

Product Highlights & Features

  • Bellows Design: Features multiple ribs that allow for maximum flexibility, preventing the rubber from tearing due to engine torque and vibration.

  • Precise Vacuum Control: Ensures 100% of the air entering the engine is measured by the AFM, which is critical for the primitive ECU found in early Vanagons.

  • Oil and Heat Resistant: Constructed from a high-density rubber compound that withstands the high ambient temperatures of the air-cooled engine bay.

Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: 071-129-967

  • Application: Connects Air Flow Meter to Throttle Body

  • Material: Heavy-duty Molded Rubber

  • Engine Fitment: 2.0L Air-Cooled Type 4

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • The "Accordion" Check: To inspect this part, you must remove it and stretch the bellows. Cracks often hide in the "valleys" of the ribs and are only visible when the boot is flexed.

  • Clamp Alignment: Ensure the hose clamps are seated behind the raised lip on both the AFM and the throttle body. If the clamps are not positioned correctly, the boot can pop off under a backfire.

  • Avoid Over-tightening: While the seal must be airtight, over-tightening worm-gear clamps can cut into the 40-year-old plastic of the AFM or the new rubber of the boot.
