EMPI Piston Ring Compressor (88mm–94mm)
Designed for high-performance and large-displacement engine builds, the EMPI Piston Ring Compressor is a mandatory tool for installing oversized cylinders. This tool provides the necessary tension to compress heavy-duty or performance piston rings, allowing the cylinder barrel to slide smoothly into place. By ensuring the rings stay perfectly seated in their grooves during assembly, this tool prevents the broken rings and cylinder wall damage that often occur during "big bore" engine builds.
Key Features:
-
Large Displacement Optimized: Specifically sized to handle the most popular performance piston diameters, from 88mm "slip-ins" to 94mm high-performance sets.
-
Spring Steel Tension: Constructed from high-strength spring steel that maintains its shape while providing even, 360-degree pressure around the rings.
-
Component Safety: Eliminates the risk of snagging a ring on the cylinder chamfer, protecting your investment in high-performance engine parts.
-
Slim Profile: The low-profile design allows for easy removal once the cylinder has successfully cleared the rings, even in the tight confines of the cylinder head studs.

Engine Application & Fitment
This tool is the correct choice for performance air-cooled Volkswagen engine builds:
| Piston Size | Common Engine Application |
| 88mm | 1679cc (Slip-in) or 1680cc (Machine-in) |
| 90.5mm | 1776cc Performance Engines |
| 92mm | 1835cc or 1914cc (Thick Wall) Engines |
| 94mm | 1914cc or 2110cc+ High-Displacement Engines |
Tech Tip: When working with larger 90.5mm or 94mm pistons, the ring tension is often higher than standard sets. Ensure the tool is centered over the ring pack before applying pressure. Use a generous amount of assembly lube or engine oil to ensure the rings compress easily without binding against the tool or the cylinder edge.
