Air Filter Element – 025-129-620A
The 025-129-620A is the standard replacement air filter element designed for the Volkswagen Vanagon equipped with water-cooled engines. Located within the air cleaner housing in the engine compartment, this cylindrical filter is the primary defense against dust, dirt, and debris entering the intake system. For the Wasserboxer engine, maintaining a clean air supply is essential for accurate Air Flow Meter (AFM) readings, optimal fuel economy, and preventing internal engine wear.
Constructed with high-quality pleated paper media and durable rubber seals, the 025-129-620A ensures a tight fit within the airbox to prevent "unfiltered" air from bypassing the element. Regular replacement of this filter is a fundamental part of Vanagon maintenance, especially for vehicles driven in dusty environments or those stored for long periods where rodents might interfere with the intake system.

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Airbox Inspection: When replacing the filter, take a moment to vacuum out the bottom of the airbox. Debris often collects in the "snorkel" or the bottom of the housing and can quickly clog a brand-new filter.
-
Check the Snorkel: Ensure the plastic intake snorkel is properly attached to the body of the van. If it has fallen off, the engine will pull hot, dirty air from the engine bay rather than cool air from the D-pillar.
-
AFM Care: Avoid using "oiled" performance filters on Vanagons with the original Air Flow Meter, as the oil can coat the internal sensor and cause poor running conditions. This paper filter is the safest choice for stock setups.
-
Service Interval: It is recommended to inspect the air filter every 10,000 miles and replace it every 20,000 miles, or more frequently if driving in rural or dusty conditions.
