Type 3 Front Hood Seal – 311-703(A)

The 311-703(A) is an essential restoration item for any Type 3 owner. Because the "frunk" of a Type 3 houses critical electrical systems, a failed hood seal is often the root cause of electrical gremlins and floor pan rust. This seal runs along the perimeter of the hood opening, providing a soft cushion that seals out wind noise and rain.

Whether you are restoring a show-winning Notchback or maintaining a daily-driver Squareback, this seal offers the factory-correct look and function. It is designed for easy installation into the body's seal track and is pliable enough to conform to the curves of the Type 3’s front-end styling.

Detailed Vehicle Compatibility

VW Type 3 (Notchback, Fastback, Squareback):

  • 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973

Product Highlights & Features

  • Watertight Barrier: Prevents water from pooling in the spare tire well and trunk floor.

  • Flexible EPDM Rubber: Stays soft in freezing temperatures and won't melt or get "sticky" in extreme heat.

  • OEM Style Extrusion: Matches the original dimensions to ensure the hood sits flush with the fenders when latched.

Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: 311-703 / 311-703A

  • Position: Front Hood (Body Side)

  • Material: Black EPDM Rubber

  • Length: Full perimeter length for Type 15/31/36 chassis

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Track Cleaning: Before installing the new seal, use a small flat-head screwdriver or wire brush to remove all old rubber and adhesive from the metal mounting channel.

  • Adhesive Usage: While the seal is designed to press into the track, a few small beads of weatherstrip adhesive in the corners can help keep it perfectly in place during the first few hood closures.

  • Settling Period: After installation, leave the hood latched for 24–48 hours. This allows the new rubber to "take a set" and compress slightly, which will make the hood easier to open and close in the future.
