Crankshaft Pulley Seal (Waterboxxer) – 025-105-247A
The 025-105-247A is the primary oil barrier at the front (pulley end) of the 1900cc and 2100cc Vanagon engines. In a rear-engine vehicle like the Vanagon, an oil leak at the crankshaft pulley can be particularly troublesome as the air flow can pull that oil onto the alternator and AC belts, or even into the radiator area. This seal features a specialized spring-loaded lip to maintain a tight grip on the crankshaft even under high RPM.
Note: This part is for 2WD models. Syncro (4WD) models often utilize a different seal (025-105-249A) depending on the specific pulley configuration and the presence of the protection plate.

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Clean the Crank Snout: Use a very fine scotch-brite pad or 2000-grit sandpaper to clean any old residue or oxidation from the crankshaft snout. A perfectly smooth surface is required for the new seal to work correctly.
-
The "Lube" Rule: Just like the Type 4 seal, never install this "dry." A light coating of clean engine oil on the inner lip will prevent the friction-burn that can destroy a new seal in the first 30 seconds of engine start-up.
-
Drive it Straight: Ensure the seal is driven perfectly flush into the engine case. If it's tilted even slightly, the "wobble" of the spinning crankshaft will quickly wear out the sealing lip, leading to a fresh leak.
