The 111-198-481OS is a critical component for professional engine machinists and restorers. Over decades of use, the magnesium or aluminum alloy cases of the Type 1 engine can "pound out," leading to a loose fit at the main bearings or excessive crankshaft end-play. By line-boring the case to a 0.40mm oversize and machining the thrust face by 0.40mm, you can return the engine to factory-tight tolerances. This bearing set is the exact hardware required to bridge the gap between a standard crankshaft and a precision-machined engine case.

This set is compatible with the entire range of upright air-cooled engines from the 40hp 1200cc through the final 1600cc dual-port models.

Installation & Maintenance Tips

  • Measure Twice: Before ordering, use a precision micrometer to verify that your machinist has bored the case to exactly +0.40mm and cut the thrust to +0.40mm. Using the wrong "oversize" set will result in oil pressure failure or engine seizure.

  • Clean the Galleys: Before installing these bearings, ensure the engine case oil galleys are completely free of machining shavings or debris. Any metal left behind will quickly score the new bearing surfaces.

  • Assembly Lube: Use a high-quality engine assembly lube on the bearing faces during installation. Do not use standard motor oil, as it may drain away before the engine builds initial oil pressure on its first start.
