EMPI Case Saver Set – 00-4004-0
The 00-4004-0 Case Savers are a mandatory upgrade for any serious engine builder. Magnesium VW cases are notorious for "pulling" head studs out of the block under high heat or increased compression. These steel inserts provide a much larger surface area and a more durable thread than the original case material.
By installing these, you transition from a weak thread in the soft case to a robust steel-threaded insert. This set is specifically designed for 8mm head studs, which were standard on many later 1600cc dual-port engines and are often preferred by performance builders for their ability to stretch slightly without snapping.

Installation & Maintenance Tips
-
Machining Required: Installing these requires the engine case to be bored and tapped to 12mm-1.5. This should ideally be done by a professional machinist to ensure the studs remain perfectly perpendicular to the case.
-
Loctite Usage: Use a high-strength, high-temp thread locker (like Red Loctite) when installing the inserts into the case to prevent them from backing out when the head is removed.
-
Bottoming Out: Ensure the inserts are installed slightly below the deck surface of the case so they do not interfere with the cylinder seating.
